Summer sees an influx of tourists, crowding favorite spots. Many seek mountain retreats to escape the heat. Fortunately, tranquil locations like Lungerersee offer a peaceful escape from the bustling crowds.

Lake Lungern is a great weekend day trip, just an hour from Zurich. This charming, tropical-like lake offers a perfect natural getaway.

Lungerersee is named after the nearby town, Lungern, easily reachable by train. Here are some top activities to enjoy on the lake.

Explore Lungern town

Lungern, a peaceful town, boasts a lakeside promenade, charming Swiss chalets, and a sizable camping area by the lake. It provides a serene retreat away from the busy Jungfrau region, allowing you to appreciate the scenery without the constant presence of tourists at every turn.

Hike around the lake

Commencing in Lungern, the most delightful hike encircles the lake. Suitable for bikers, strollers, and families, the path promises picturesque scenes. Don't forget your camera; the turquoise lake, flower-filled meadows, and mountain views create a perfect landscape. Even on a scorching summer day, the shaded path amid trees and mountains remains appealing. The eastern lakeside route, while closer to the water with numerous picnic spots, may be a bit noisy due to the nearby main road.

Dundelbach waterfall

Easily visible from Lungern, the Dundelbach waterfall provides a refreshing option for cooling off on a hot summer day.

Bürglen beach

Opposite Lungern lies Seebad Bürglen, a petite lakeside spot ideal for swimming in clear water, barbecues, and beach leisure. It features a waterslide for children, and roadside parking is free.

Viewing Point Schoenbuehel

When traveling to Lake Brienz, don't miss the Schoenbuehel viewing point. It provides breathtaking views of Lake Lungern. While the parking area is small and close to a busy road, it's typically not crowded. The incredible views make the stop highly rewarding.

For a less crowded option with equally tropical hues as Lake Brienz, choose Lake Lungern. Access hiking trails via the cable car from Lungern to Turren for spectacular views. Visit their website for details.

Fishing is a popular choice in the region. Fischerparadies Lungern rents boats, assists with permits (starting at 30 CHF per day, up to 160 CHF annually), and provides training at 65 CHF per hour.

We found free parking at the Parish of Lungern, but there are several other free parking lots around the lake.
